First reason to get a long veil is that it flows the best in the wind for elegant, epic shots. Short, finger-length veils can not be tossed or wrapped around in a couple’s photo. Not only that, but long veils add movement to the photo that would not have been there otherwise. Secondly, the weight and layers of the veil matters. I normally tell my brides to get a lightweight sheer veil with minimal beading that is only one layer. If your veil is too heavy, it can not fly in the breeze easily. Also if your long veil is tiered, the shorter layer can be distracting. My favorite long cathedral veils are typically plain sheer ivory tulle. These are simply stunning and classic.
