My Favorite Locations for Family Sessions in Missoula Montana 2024

January 16, 2024

Some of you that have been around for a while know that before I was a wedding photographer, I only shot families. While weddings take up most of my time these days (in the best way, because I love it) Family Sessions still have a piece of my heart. That being said, mamas around Missoula always ask me what my favorite spots are. So, I am going to share with you three of my favorite locations for family sessions around Missoula, Montana.

First being Greenough, Park. Okay, okay… I know what you are thinking. “Come on Jess, everyone knows about this spot.” But hear me out. This is one of my favorite locations because YEAR ROUND it is shootable. It can be mid-winter or late summer, this place always changes with the seasons for the better. My favorite season here is by far is the Fall. All the leaves change and it simply is magical.

Summer time at Greenough Park:

Secondly, for those wanting a more mountainous view and tall grass… Blue Mountain never disappoints at golden hour. You may have to be willing to take a 5-10 minute walk up, but once you are there it is stunning. I wouldn't say you can shoot this place year round, only because the snow can make it hard walk around. However, in the summer and fall months, this places really shines.

Lastly, Maclay Flats is one that surprised me this past year. I did not realize how beautiful it could be depending on the time of day you photograph there. There is access to a river, which allows for stunning water front photos. The river can also act as a reward to the kiddos to play in if they smile during the session. This is another spot that can be shot at year round since it is flat and not inclined. It also has beautiful trees that turn to bright colors in the fall months.

Overall, there are so many great spots around Missoula, Montana to take photos with your family. The best thing to go is decide what views you want in your photographs and go from there. I hope you find this helpful as you plan your next family session. And remember, family sessions are suppose to be fun!!
